“Horses, Livestock and Land” Workshops.
Jefferson County Conservation District will again be offering classes for horse
and livestock owners and small farm operators in the spring of 2009. Classes
will be scheduled in March and April 2009. Class topics will be "Dealing with
Manure", " Mud Management", "Pastures and Paddocks", and "Farm Planning". Dates and
class sites will be announced later this winter.
The classes will focus on
beneficial management techniques for your farm with optimum health of your
animals and the environment in mind. Most topics will be geared toward horse
owners, but all livestock owners can learn techniques to better manage their
farm.
Class topics will include:
* Preparing your farm for
winter; an overview of what to do and what you’ll need for
caring for your livestock over the
winter months;
*
How to reduce mud in fields
and paddocks;
* How to effectively manage
manure, including composting;
* Pasture management and using
rotational grazing, and sacrifice areas to get the
most out of the pasture you have;
*
Poisonous weeds that affect
livestock and how to deal with them;
* Wildlife enhancement using
native plants and other techniques for promoting
wildlife habitat;
*
Dealing with nuisance
species on your farm, including insects that can carry
disease.
*
Planning and developing your
farm for optimum management of your livestock
and the environment.
The
classes will be free of charge. The classes will be
funded by the
Dept. of Ecology through a grant from
Jefferson
County Public Health and
the WRIA (Water Resources Inventory Area) 17 Planning Unit.
